About TET - Overview
Teaching continues to be a coveted profession and thousand those desirous of taking up teaching jobs took TET exam in Tamil Nadu every year. As according to the new rules laid down on the 23rd August 2010, the minimum qualifications of a teacher have been clearly defined. TET stands for Teacher Eligibility Test. An aspiring teacher in the state of Tamil Nadu has to clear at least one TET paper to be able to teach a government recognized school. The TET paper 1 is for those who are seeking appointment as Secondary Grade Teacher for classes I to VI, but for those who are aiming at teaching higher classes (VI to X) have to clear the TET paper II.
Understanding the TET exam pattern and structure
The TET papers have a well defined structure and content which follows a strict pattern set for each year. The TET paper 1 has 150 Multiple Choice Questions that have to be answered in 3 hours. They pertaining subjects include Child Development and Pedagogy, a vernacular language, English, Mathematics and Environmental Studies. The language of the question paper is either Tamil or English and that depends upon the preference of the candidate. All candidates are allowed to sit for the TET 1 examination only if they have all required qualification for a Secondary Grade Teacher. All the candidates who score above 55% in the TET Paper 1 are considered eligible and hence called for Certificate verification; this eventually means a verification of academic qualifications and a personal interview. A TET certificate is issued to only those candidates who are deemed eligible and an issued certificate is valid for 7 years from the date of issue.
Criteria and Syllabus coverage for the examination
Only graduate teachers are eligible for appearing for the TET paper 2 examinations which mainly target the people looking forward to teach from Classes VI to X. As according to the act laid down on 23rd August 2010, all graduate teachers who are appointed at Unaided Institutions without the necessary qualifications will have to pass the TET Paper 2 within 5 years in addition to acquiring the other prescribed qualifications. The candidates should have a Graduation degree in Art or Science and a Bachelor’s degree in Education (B.Ed). The recognized subjects include English, Tamil, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Botany, Zoology, History, Geography etc. even a B. Litt degree is valid as long as it is in any of the allied subjects mentioned before. Just like Paper 1 this Paper also has a preset pattern and is based on pre-specified subjects only. Any person scoring a 55% or above is considered to have passed the TET Paper 2 and is now qualified to proceed for a Certificate verification.
TET is a compulsory exam that needs to be taken by all those who are looking forward to a successful and long lasting teaching career. The content is not rocket science but definitely needs firm guidance and suggestion before the examinations. Anyone from the state of Tamil Nadu can apply for this exam in return of a nominal application and examination fee. With the advent of technology, now the forms for TET are available online and one can pay via Net Banking or Credit/ Debit cards as well.
